On February 13th, the world comes together to celebrate one of the oldest and most influential forms of mass media &ldquo;radio&rdquo;. &nbsp;United Nations states that at the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium which shapes a society&rsquo;s experience of diversity.
Proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, World Radio Day highlights the enduring power of radio in shaping societies. It is a reminder of how radio continues to inform, entertain, and amplify voices worldwide.

While print was the first form of mass media, radio became the most popular broadcasting medium.
Who Invented the Radio?
The question of who invented the radio comes with a certain amount of controversy. In 1893 the inventor Nikolai Tesla demonstrated a wireless radio in St. Louis, Missouri. Despite this demonstration, it was Guglielmo Marconi who is often credited as the father and inventor of the radio.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/inventions/guglielmo-marconi">History</a>, Italian inventor and engineer Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) developed, demonstrated and marketed the first successful long-distance wireless telegraph and in 1901 broadcast the first transatlantic radio signal. His company&rsquo;s Marconi radios ended the isolation of ocean travel and saved hundreds of lives, including all of the surviving passengers from the sinking Titanic. In 1909 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for his radio work.

New global data released for World Radio Day 2025 by the World Radio Alliance and egta, the international trade body of multiplatform TV and audio businesses, confirms that radio reaches up to 90% of the population in key markets, dominates the time spent with ad-supported audio, and remains the most trusted medium worldwide
According to <a href="%20https:/www.statista.com/statistics/1541554/audio-listening-time-share-gen-z-united-states-platform/">Statista</a>,&nbsp;the latest data gathered in the United States in 2024, teens and young adults spent most of their audio listening time with streaming music, that is, 37 percent. Streaming music videos on YouTube is also a popular choice, with 23 percent of audio time spent on the platform. AM/FM Radio closely followed with a share of 20 percent of Gen Z audio time.&nbsp;
