When Egyptian actress and content creator Salma Maher speaks about success, she avoids the language of overnight breakthroughs and relentless positivity. Instead, her conversation on Brain Busters on Nile FM centers on discipline, routine, and the often uncomfortable reality of starting again.
Salma, the founder of the digital storytelling project Kalam Folan, has built her work around short, five-to-six-minute filmed scenes inspired by real stories sent in by members of the public. The premise is simple but resonant: to remind people that they are not alone, even when life derails carefully laid plans.
Speaking to Basmah on the show, Salma reflected on how easily motivation is overvalued. &ldquo;Motivation and inspiration are very unreliable,&rdquo; she said, arguing that consistency matters more than emotional highs. Her approach favors small, achievable daily goals over dramatic bursts of enthusiasm, a philosophy that mirrors a growing shift in how creatives discuss productivity.
 Why Discipline Matters More Than Motivation Reflecting on how people often rely on motivation to begin new goals, Salma explained that inspiration can be misleading. &ldquo;Motivation and inspiration are very unreliable,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;They come and go. What really matters is persistence and discipline.&rdquo; Instead of waiting for the perfect emotional push, Salma encourages setting small, daily goals. &ldquo;By putting achievable goals every day, things get done. And if you don&rsquo;t accomplish something today, that&rsquo;s okay. Tomorrow is another day,&rdquo; she added. &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t be hard on yourself, and don&rsquo;t expect perfection. When you stop, you start questioning yourself, your talent, your worth, and whether people will still accept you.&rdquo; What ultimately helped her return was a shift in mindset. &ldquo;I decided to stop waiting for results and focus on enjoying the process,&rdquo; she explained. &ldquo;When I look back at my life one day, I want to know that I lived it fully and did the things I loved. I do not want to regret not trying.&rdquo; For Salma, results are never guaranteed, but fulfillment comes from showing up every day and doing meaningful work.
 How Learning Keeps the Excitement Alive Like many creatives, Salma admitted that excitement can fade over time. Her solution is continuous learning. &ldquo;Learning new techniques and methods always brings excitement back,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;No matter how advanced you are, there is always something new to learn.&rdquo; She also finds inspiration in beginners. &ldquo;I love taking courses with beginners because I see the excitement in their eyes. It reminds me why I started in the first place and helps me reconnect with the basics.&rdquo;
 Dealing With Discouraging Voices Creating something new often invites criticism, especially when dreams are not socially approved. Salma believes the key is choosing the right environment. &ldquo;We need to remove ourselves from discouraging circles,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Be around people who support you and believe in your dreams.&rdquo; When negativity comes from close circles, her advice is simple: protect your plans. &ldquo;You do not have to explain everything to everyone. Keep your dreams to yourself, work quietly, and when you succeed, they will support you.&rdquo;

 Learning to Fail and Accept It Fear of failure, Salma believes, is one of the biggest obstacles to growth. &ldquo;In improve, there is a rule called &lsquo;fail big,&rsquo;&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Sometimes failure is your starting point. It is where you learn and experiment.&rdquo; By embracing mistakes rather than fearing them, creativity becomes freer and less restricted. &ldquo;When you fail big, you sometimes end up doing something really beautiful because you are not overthinking anymore.&rdquo;
