Now, her story is set to be experienced in a completely new way.</p>
<p>On the 3rd of October, &ldquo;Umm Kulthum.. Daybeen Fi Sout El-Sitt&rdquo; musical will premiere, offering audiences an intimate journey through the life of the legendary singer. More than just a performance, it is a celebration of a woman whose artistry and humanity left an indelible mark on history.</p>
<p>Written and produced by Medhat El Adl, with music by Khaled El Kammar and Ihab Abdel Wahid, and directed by Ahmed Fouad, the production blends cutting-edge technology with timeless storytelling to uncover aspects of Umm Kulthum&rsquo;s life that have rarely been seen.</p>

<p><strong>How did the idea come to you, and how were you able to translate it into a major musical production?</strong></p>
<p>The idea was originally presented to me by Dr. Medhat El Adl. From the start, I was very enthusiastic because I&rsquo;ve always believed we have towering figures in our history who deserve to be celebrated across different artistic forms&mdash;cinema, drama, or theater. We chose the most challenging format, which is theater, to tell the story of the most important artist in the Arab world, and one of the most significant voices globally. Umm Kulthum was not only a singer with a powerful voice that continues to live in our hearts, but also a role model who proved how art can influence lives far beyond the stage. Even fifty years after her death, people still follow her, and that in itself shows her lasting impact.</p>
<p><strong>What were the biggest challenges you faced during preparation and directing?</strong></p>
<p>Casting was the toughest part. Since this is a musical, the actors had to sing as well as act, and they needed strong performance and movement skills. It took us a long time to finalize the cast, ensuring they could do the best to the iconic roles they were stepping into.</p>

<p><strong>How long did the preparations take, including rehearsals and technical arrangements?</strong></p>
<p>We&rsquo;ve been preparing for more than six months now, starting even before the official project announcement. For a musical, that is actually a short preparation period, as international productions can take one to two years. But we worked with a strict schedule, knowing from day one when the premiere would be. This helped us stay focused and deliver a show that we believe will meet, and hopefully exceed, audience expectations.</p>
<p><strong>If someone is attending the play for the first time, what kind of experience can they expect?</strong></p>
<p>They can expect something very different. The play is not just about Umm Kulthum the singer, but Umm Kulthum the person. Even those who don&rsquo;t know her will discover how much she deserves to be celebrated in every artistic form, not just musical theater. The audience will enjoy the show, learn new details, and live through the story in depth.</p>

<p><strong>Is there a particular scene that you feel truly captures Umm Kulthum&rsquo;s spirit?</strong></p>
<p>It&rsquo;s difficult to pick one, because the entire show is a journey. We start with her childhood, move through her youth, and highlight her significant role during the war effort, as well as her collaborations with great composers of her time. The play captures both her artistry and her humanity, which we rarely get to see. I hope that audiences will feel as if they are meeting Umm Kulthum live on stage, closer to her true spirit.</p>
<p><strong>What does this experience mean to you personally and professionally?</strong></p>
<p>It is a milestone for me. Working with Dr. Medhat El Adl has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. He is a supportive collaborator who always pushes for excellence. He is not only the writer and lyricist but also the producer, and he never hesitates to invest in making the work the best it can be. My collaboration with Ehab Abd Elwahed and Khaled Al Kammar has also been incredible. We&rsquo;ve built great chemistry as a team, always focusing on the details. Together, we want this to be more than just a production&mdash;we want it to reignite Egypt&rsquo;s legacy in musical theater, something we excelled at a century ago.</p>

<p><strong>How did you strike a balance between documenting Umm Kulthum&rsquo;s biography and creating an engaging artistic show?</strong></p>
<p>We wanted Umm Kulthum to feel real and alive, not just a historical figure. The production is documented, based on real events, but it is not a documentary. The drama and emotions are ours as creators. This allowed us to bring her closer to the audience&rsquo;s hearts while still respecting the historical truth.</p>
<p><strong>Will the play be limited to Egypt, or are there plans to expand regionally and internationally?</strong></p>
<p>A production of this scale, carrying Umm Kulthum&rsquo;s name, is destined to resonate beyond Egypt. Our plan is to take it across the Arab world and, hopefully, to international stages as well.</p>

I want audiences to leave the theater proud of Egypt&rsquo;s artistic heritage and confident that our story is still being written.</p>

<p><strong>How did you receive the news of winning the Special Jury Prize at the Arab Hollywood Film Festival on your role in Seret Ahl El Daye?</strong></p>
<p>Winning the Special Jury Prize at the Arab Hollywood Film Festival on my role in &lsquo;Daye&rsquo;, means a great deal to me. It represents both, artistic maturity and the start of a new phase in my career.</p>
<p><strong>What attracted you to the story of Daye? And how did you find presenting a character from a family on a difficult journey from Aswan to Cairo?</strong></p>
<p>What attracted me most to the story was the depth of its humanity &mdash; how it highlights the real and underrepresented presence of people with albinism in our communities. The script offered a rare opportunity to dive into their world, understand their emotions, and explore how they relate to those around them.</p>

<p><strong>How would you describe your experience working with director Karim El Shenawy?</strong></p>
<p>Working with director Karim El Shenawy was a great enriching experience. He&rsquo;s a director who knows exactly what he wants and always chooses scripts with strong social angles. His unique touch was present in every aspect of the film. It was an honor to be part of a cast with such diverse acting backgrounds. Being part of international festivals like Berlinale and Red Sea was another personal milestone &mdash; a confirmation of my presence not only in the Arab film scene but also on a broader, more global level.</p>
<p><strong>What does the Sudanese woman represent to you?</strong></p>
<p>My role reminded me of the power and resilience of Sudanese women who, despite political and social struggles, remain pillars of courage, beauty, and perseverance across all fields, not just in cinema. I believe that my character sends a clear message to every woman suffering in silence: &lsquo;We do not have the luxury of collapsing&rsquo;.</p>
<p><strong>Any upcoming projects?</strong></p>
<p>Right now, I&rsquo;m preparing for a number of projects; some completed, some in progress, and others still in the early discussion phase. I will continue to appear in Egyptian productions, especially after the success of "Ashgal Shaqa Gedan"</p>

Exclusive | Islam Mubarak on 'Siret Ahl El-Daye' and Crossing Cultural Boundaries Through Cinema

<p>Wrapped in the Egyptian flag and standing tall on the podium, Farida Khalil just made sports history. At only 14 years old, she struck gold at the Modern Pentathlon World Championship in Lithuania; becoming the youngest women&rsquo;s singles champion ever. With an impressive 1,457 points against athletes from 32 nations, Farida has already earned a spot among the sport&rsquo;s brightest stars.</p>
<p>And her 2025 season is totally unmatched. From gold at the World Cup in Cairo, silver in Hungary, and more golds in Bulgaria and Alexandria, to sweeping both the Youth and Junior World Championships, Farida has been unstoppable. She even smashed world records across senior, U20, and U17 levels, something no one her age has ever done before.</p>
<p>NileFM sat down with Farida to chat about her incredible journey, how she juggles school with training, and what&rsquo;s next for Egypt&rsquo;s very own pentathlon prodigy.</p>

<p>My name is Farida Khalil, I&rsquo;m 14 years old, and I&rsquo;m a modern pentathlete from Egypt. Even though I&rsquo;m still young, I&rsquo;ve been lucky enough to compete at the highest level and win multiple World Cups and World Championships.</p>
<p><strong>How did you first get involved in modern pentathlon?</strong></p>
<p>I started really young because I loved sports and being active. At first, I was into swimming and running, but when I discovered modern pentathlon, with its five disciplines, it felt like the perfect challenge. The variety kept me motivated, and I enjoyed pushing myself to get better every day.</p>
<p><strong>What inspired you to choose this sport over others?</strong></p>
<p>What inspired me is how unique pentathlon is. Not many athletes can say they train in fencing, swimming, riding, running, and shooting all together. It&rsquo;s a complete test of body and mind, and I wanted to prove to myself that I could handle it. I was also inspired by Egyptian champions who showed me that we can compete with the very best in the world.</p>

<p><strong>What has been the biggest challenge you&rsquo;ve faced in your journey so far?</strong></p>
<p>Balancing everything at such a young age. Competing against older, more experienced athletes can feel overwhelming, and managing my emotions has been a big lesson. But I&rsquo;ve learned that believing in yourself is the most important thing.</p>

<p><strong>How did it feel to make history by winning multiple world titles in the same year?</strong></p>
<p>It was unbelievable. Achieving something no one expected from a 14-year-old was beyond my dreams. Standing on the podium with Egypt&rsquo;s flag was the proudest moment of my life and gave me huge motivation for the future.</p>
<p><strong>Who has been your biggest support or mentor throughout your career?</strong></p>
<p>My family has always been my biggest support, especially my mother and brothers. They&rsquo;ve been with me through the tough training sessions and the big wins. My dad also plays a huge role in guiding me and helping me believe in myself.</p>
<p><strong>What are your short-term and long-term goals in the sport?</strong></p>
<p>In the short term, I want to keep improving and stay consistent across all five disciplines. Long term, my dream is to compete at the Olympic Games and hopefully win gold for Egypt. I also want to inspire other young athletes to believe in themselves.</p>
<p><strong>What advice would you give to other young athletes chasing their dreams?</strong></p>
<p>Believe in yourself, even if others doubt you. Work hard every single day, stay patient, and never give up on your dreams. Success doesn&rsquo;t happen overnight, but if you love what you do and stay committed, anything is possible.</p>

That longing finds expression in Montr&eacute;al, where the Salon International du Livre Arabe returns for its second edition from the 3rd to the 5th of October under the theme &ldquo;Montr&eacute;al Speaks Arabic.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>More Than Just Books</strong></p>
<p>Organized by the Service Public pour l&rsquo;Int&eacute;gration des Immigrants (SPDI) and directed by Aliaa Shafie Mohamed, the fair offers far more than a literary showcase. Attendees can explore Arabic titles spanning literature, history, poetry, cinema, theater, religion, and politics&mdash;while also enjoying Egyptian koshary, hawawshi, and other beloved Arab dishes. New this year, the program introduces opportunities to learn the Arabic language.</p>
<p>To understand the vision behind the fair, Nile FM spoke with Egyptian journalist and executive director Hossam Abdelkader Mokbel, who has devoted his career to cultural exchange at home and abroad.</p>
<p><strong>The Vision Behind the Fair</strong></p>
<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m a journalist at heart, with more than 30 years in the field,&rdquo; Mokbel says. His career includes serving as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of a renowned Egyptian magazine, spending a decade as Cultural and Media Advisor at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and publishing four books. &ldquo;Culture has always been the core of my work.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>Stronger Than Expected</strong></p>
<p>Reflecting on the fair&rsquo;s debut, Mokbel notes the community&rsquo;s enthusiasm: &ldquo;The Arab community here is deeply eager for culture. Last year&rsquo;s turnout exceeded all expectations and motivated us to continue.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>What&rsquo;s New This Year</strong></p>
<p>To keep audiences engaged, this edition introduces fresh elements. &ldquo;Visitors will discover newly published Arabic titles, calligraphy workshops, storytelling for children, and, for the first time, a workshop on novel writing,&rdquo; Mokbel shares. Literary evenings and daily author talks will foster direct exchanges between writers and readers.</p>
<p><strong>Books That Resonate</strong></p>
<p>Asked which genres draw the most interest, Mokbel highlights history and literature. &ldquo;Novels are in especially high demand, and Naguib Mahfouz remains a frequent topic of discussion. Children&rsquo;s books are also gaining popularity, particularly those that introduce Arab culture in simple, engaging ways.&rdquo;</p>

Our goal was to create a complete cultural experience, which is why food is such an important part of it.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>Expanding Publisher Participation</strong></p>
<p>This year also brings broader publishing participation. &ldquo;In our first edition, we hosted 15 Canadian publishers and bookstores,&rdquo; Mokbel explains. &ldquo;Now, publishers from outside Canada are also sending books to be showcased on their behalf, ensuring their work reaches the Arab community here.&rdquo;</p>

Behind it all are two rising scriptwriters, Samar Bahgat and Nadeen Nader, who first met in a workshop and went on to form one of the strongest creative duos in Egyptian drama.</p>

<p><strong>When you first came across the idea of '220 Days,' what made you want to join the project?</strong></p>
<p>The beauty of the series is in its duality two worlds running side by side: reality, and the one Ahmed creates in his novel. It&rsquo;s not just an escape, it&rsquo;s his way of reimagining the life he wants with his daughter. Emotional, layered, and deeply human, the show explores family relationships in a way that feels fresh and unforgettable.</p>
<p><strong>The series mixes deep emotion with medical drama &mdash; how did you approach balancing those two aspects in your writing?</strong></p>
<p>What excited us was finding that balance between the medical storyline and the raw human emotions around it. We didn&rsquo;t just want to show a condition on screen, we wanted to explore how it ripples through people&rsquo;s lives, their choices, relationships, and growth. The series isn&rsquo;t only about the diagnosis, it&rsquo;s about the journey, the resilience, and the humanity behind it. At the same time, we were committed to accuracy, so we collaborated closely with doctors to make sure every stage of the condition was portrayed authentically. It was a real challenge, but also the heart of what makes the show powerful.</p>

<p><strong>What part of scriptwriting do you love the most, building characters, dialogue, or structuring the story?</strong></p>
<p>For me, scriptwriting is a lot like painting. Every part is connected to the other, the storyline, the characters, the dialogue. I enjoy the process of writing dialogue the most, because it allows me to really step into the characters&rsquo; shoes and see the world from their perspective. I often ask myself: how would they react, what would they say, what would they feel in this moment? Living with the characters in this way makes them real to me. And if the words I write can touch someone, make them feel seen or understood, then I feel like my work has truly achieved its purpose.</p>
<p><strong>What was it like writing for Saba Mubarak&rsquo;s character Mariam? Did you picture her in the role while writing?</strong></p>
<p>Mariam is such a complex character, she carries a lot of past baggage and throughout the series she faces some incredibly difficult situations. From the very start of the writing process, we always imagined Saba in the role, and she turned out to be the perfect fit. During the table readings, we had deep discussions with her about Mariam, and together we shaped a unified vision of who this character is and all the sides to her. We explored not only her artistic side and her hidden layers, but also her love story with Ahmed, the fears that surface when she learns about his medical condition, her complicated relationship with her father, her emotional encounter with her mother, and the bond she develops with Magda, Ahmed&rsquo;s mother and the entire family. These many layers don&rsquo;t appear all at once, but unfold gradually, giving the audience a chance to really live with Mariam and discover her piece by piece</p>

<p><strong>What drew you personally to be part of the writing team of 220 Days?</strong></p>
<p>The story felt truly unique, different from anything I had come across before. It blends powerful emotions with imaginative fictional elements in a way that is both refreshing and compelling.</p>
<p><strong>As a scriptwriter, what do you enjoy most about bringing stories like this to life?</strong></p>
<p>The process of transforming emotions, ideas, and imagination into something that feels real on screen. Writing allows me to give characters a voice, build worlds that people can immerse themselves in, and create moments that resonate on a personal level. For me, the most rewarding part is knowing that a story I help shape can move people, touch them, make them think, or even inspire them long after they&rsquo;ve watched it.</p>

<p><strong>How do you usually find inspiration when developing complex characters such as Ahmed?</strong></p>
<p>I focus on the human core of the character, their fears and hopes. With Ahmed Fadl, the inspiration came from his fight against a silent villain: time. Knowing he might not live beyond 220 days, he chooses to create a world where his daughter can always find him. That balance of love, fear, and legacy is what inspired me most.</p>
<p><strong>How was the experience of writing for Karim Fahmy&rsquo;s character? Did his style as an actor influence your writing in any way?</strong></p>
<p>Writing for Karim Fahmy&rsquo;s character was an inspiring experience. His style as an actor, subtle, emotionally layered, and deeply authentic absolutely influenced the way I approached writing his character. Knowing how he brings nuance to even the smallest moments allowed me to craft dialogue and scenes with more depth, trusting that he would elevate them through his performance. In many ways, his presence shaped not only the voice of the character but also how the story&rsquo;s emotional weight came through on screen.</p>

<p><strong>How did you both first meet and decide to collaborate as scriptwriters?</strong></p>
<p>We first met in 'El Motahama's' writing workshop back in 2021, and we immediately connected.</p>
<p><strong>What makes your writing partnership work so smoothly?</strong></p>
<p>We&rsquo;re very much alike in the way we think&mdash;it&rsquo;s almost like looking into a mirror. We never doubt each other&rsquo;s ideas, which makes the collaboration seamless and natural.</p>

It&rsquo;s not just about drama for entertainment&mdash;it&rsquo;s about exploring universal themes like time, love, and legacy in a way that feels both personal and cinematic. My hope is that it leaves a lasting impression on viewers and opens the door for more diverse, thought-provoking storytelling in Egyptian drama.</p>

<p>When asked whether hope depends on circumstances or practice, Mostafa Salem leaned firmly toward practice. &ldquo;I always see that hope is related to gratitude in a way,&rdquo; he explained. For him, gratitude is a daily habit: by noticing small positives around us, we slowly build a reservoir of hope. &ldquo;People are always surrounded by positive things, but once they get used to it, they don&rsquo;t see it anymore,&rdquo; he said. Constant exposure to &ldquo;perfect&rdquo; online images can trap us in toxic comparisons. His solution: guard your energy. &ldquo;You have to decrease this intake of social media,&rdquo; he advised, explaining that unplugging frees space for creativity and self-focus.</p>

<p>Salem&rsquo;s own story illustrates this. After winning a scholarship for a master&rsquo;s degree at the University of Greenwich, military service prevented him from traveling. Instead of giving up, he entered an international architecture competition linked to the Venice Biennale, and won, representing Egypt on a global stage. &ldquo;In the middle of all this happening, I just made sure to look for the opportunity, find it, and go for it.&rdquo; His lesson: even when plans collapse, &ldquo;there&rsquo;s definitely something better for you; just believe it will come forward.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Deena Abu-Hassan, born to an English mother and Egyptian father, grew up in Saudi Arabia before moving to Egypt at age 10. She met her husband, Karim, an avid rider since childhood and now her business partner, at a local horse club when they were teenagers. Their shared love of horses soon became the foundation for both their marriage and their career.</p>
<p>As a guest on NileFM&rsquo;s &lsquo;The Big Drive&rsquo; with Zeinab and Sami, Deena shared how her journey with horses began at age four during a summer in England. While visiting family, her father lifted her onto the back of a bay horse outside a village pub. From that moment, she was hooked. Riding lessons followed in England and Saudi Arabia, and when her family moved to Egypt, the first thing they did, even before finding a school, was look for a stable.</p>

<p>As teenagers, Deena and Karim spent every free moment riding and competing. &ldquo;I was 15 when we met at our local horse club, and Karim had been riding since he was seven,&rdquo; Deena recalled. &ldquo;Horses quickly became the center of our lives. After school and on weekends, it was always about training and competing. As our relationship grew, so did our dream.&rdquo;</p>
<p>That dream became Kingsville, an academy not only to teach riding but also to raise awareness about horse welfare. &ldquo;We wanted to change the narrative in Egypt by showing that horses can be cared for and respected, while creating a community we would want our own children to grow up in,&rdquo; she said.</p>
<p>&nbsp;<strong>Changing the Narrative</strong></p>
<p>&ldquo;People often hear negative stories about horse welfare in Egypt,&rdquo; Deena explains. &ldquo;Kingsville grew out of our dream to celebrate these animals and teach them properly. It is a place where children and adults can discover the beauty of horses.&rdquo;</p>

<p>&ldquo;Horses are incredible animals,&rdquo; Deena says. &ldquo;They are powerful yet gentle. People often fear their size, but once you build trust, the bond is indescribable. When a horse gazes into your eyes, it is pure love.&rdquo; She adds that a horse&rsquo;s heart is five times the size of a human&rsquo;s, generating a calming energy. &ldquo;If I&rsquo;ve had a stressful day, just standing near them makes everything better.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>Personalities and Pairing</strong></p>
<p>&ldquo;Every horse has its own personality,&rdquo; she notes. &ldquo;Sometimes it feels like the animal chooses you. Matching the right rider with the right horse is essential. Stressed riders may need calmer horses, while relaxed riders thrive with more energetic ones.&rdquo;</p>
<p><strong>The Journey to Kingsville</strong></p>
<p>During the pandemic, Deena and Karim opened Horseville, a small academy at their old club. &ldquo;It was beautiful, and the community loved it.&rdquo; In 2024, King&rsquo;s Polo Club approached them to expand, incorporating show jumping and dressage. &ldquo;We merged Horseville with King&rsquo;s Polo. Seeing even non-horsey people fall in love with the sport has been amazing.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Transitioning from teaching to business brought challenges. &ldquo;I spent 14 years as a teacher and suddenly had to learn marketing, PR, HR, and finance. I&rsquo;m terrible at finance, and so is Karim. But watching riders discover their paths, whether in polo, show jumping, or bonding with the horses, makes it all worthwhile.&rdquo;</p>

While not open to the public, members of the equestrian and Uptown Cairo communities will have access.</p>
<p>Deena sums up the academy&rsquo;s mission: &ldquo;We aim to promote empathy for animals, build strong rider&ndash;horse connections, and raise a new generation who value sportsmanship as much as skill.&rdquo; Located in Uptown Cairo, Kingsville&rsquo;s community includes over 30 nationalities. &ldquo;That sense of connection is just as important to us as the sport itself,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>In a farewell statement, El Khatib reflected on his eight-year tenure, highlighting the collective achievements that kept Al Ahly at the forefront of Egyptian and international sports:<br />&ldquo;For two terms, I had the honor of leading the board alongside my colleagues. Together, we worked to strengthen Al Ahly across sporting, economic, and administrative levels.
